BIRD OF
COURAGE
WADE S. WINEMAN, JR.
With material drawn primarily from the author’s
tattered old turkey-hunting journal, this second
offering by the author of East of the Slash is an
enticing blend of short stories about old turkey hunts
and chapters involving technical turkey-talk. Some of
the book’s chapters utilize old hunting tales to
illustrate turkey-hunting tactics effectively and to
describe the environment in which turkey hunters
pursue their quarry. Others simply recount
time-honored stories, most of which took place in the
Bluff Hills of southwest Mississippi or at the old OK
Hunting Club in the swamplands beside the Mississippi River.
Chapters run the gamut of the sport of turkey hunting,
from discussions about the manners in which predators
and mosquitoes affect turkey hunting, to true tales of
thrilling pursuits of majestic gobblers. Since many of
the book’s tales occurred as long ago as the 1950s,
Bird of Courage offers the reader a revealing snapshot
of the embryonic days of the modern era of turkey
hunting, effectively comparing the tactics and gear of
that era with those of today.
